Making the most of seemingly useless objects: this was the main goal of the interdisciplinary project “Making Stories” of the Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Design and Arts, Free University of Bolzano. The reinvented objects can now be admired in an exhibition.
What matters most in contemporary product design is to maximize profit. That is why products are designed and produced in such a way that they don’t last forever. “Making Stories” wants to extend the lifespan of daily objects, technologies and materials long after their warranty has expired. In collaboration with Open City Museum and TIS Innovation Park, 120 students of the faculties of Computer Science and Design and Arts of the Free University of Bolzano, took on the challenge to give new lives to broken objects. Using old radios, cameras, watches and sunglasses, they created innovative devices such as a teddy bear that teaches children how to speak, a moka-pot-alarm-clock, or a printer using simple marker pens.
Central to the project are also the stories and memories hidden behind the objects. Who was the owner of the broken coffee pot? What was the function of that broken plastic thing? What potential did the design student seen in the old toy car? Short video interviews with the previous owners of the objects and the participating students offer a glimpse into the life of – and with – things.
The exhibition opens on 5 February 2015 at 7pm at WunderFab, Via Rosmini 48, Bolzano, and is open to visitors until 13 February 2015. A selection of objects, accompanied by research of Dott.Simone Simonelli, will also be presented at the Expo Gate of Expo Milano 2015 from 9-13 February 2015.
The project is an initiative of Drama Läb, an interdisciplinary platform promoted by the Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bolzano. |
