25/03/2011 – L’azienda austriaca Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten presenta i risultati dello speciale incontro con Jean Nouvel: la collezione Vienna.
La nuova collezione “Vienna” testimonia un elegante benché radicale approccio al concetto di forma. Solo se perfettamente realizzata nel minimo dettaglio, la seduta può rivelare a pieno la sua estetica. E solo una perfetta comodità può rendere i monolitici pezzi di cui si compone la compagnia più piacevole per una lunga serata. Questi gli aspetti affrontati dall'architetto francese.
“La nostra collaborazione – dichiara Jean Nouvel – è iniziata lo scorso anno, per la produzione destinata al nuovo hotel Sofitel di Vienna. Quegli oggetti sono stati successivamente trasformati in una produzione per utilizzo da parte di privati”.
Modular Variety “Vienna” consiste in una serie di moduli che possono essere utilizzati in molteplici combinazioni per dare forma ad una chaise longue o a divani di lunghezze differenti.
La scelta del bianco, grigio e nero riflette l’eleganza che contraddistingue i lavori di Nouvel.

From March 25, 2011, Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten present the result of a very special encounter: On display in the Viennese showroom is the seating furniture collection Vienna. With their refined aesthetics, the pieces reflect Jean Nouvel’s architectural style. The co-operation between the French architect and the Austrian manufacturer started last year, when Wittmann produced the furniture for Nouvel’s new Viennese hotel Sofitel.
“Vienna” addresses an elegant, yet radical approach to form. Only when perfectly manufactured, its clear aesthetics can fully unfold. And only perfect seating comfort makes the monolithic pieces the most enjoyable companions for a long, inspiring evening. For both aspects, Jean Nouvel relied on Wittmann. “Our co-operation started last year,” explains Heinz Hofer-Wittmann, “when we produced the seating furniture for Vienna’s new Sofitel. In a joint process, those objects were subsequently transformed into a series of furniture for private and semi-private use.”
Modular Variety
“Vienna” consists of a series of modules which can be arranged in diverse ways, as to form a chaise longue or sofas of different lengths. With white, grey and black as domineering colours, the pieces reflect the timeless elegance so typical for Jean Nouvel’s architecture. “As designer, I always point out that I am not a normal designer ... although I rather prefer normal furniture,” says Jean Nouvel. His Wittmann collection complies with this unpretentious approach.
Pritzker Laureate Jean Nouvel
French architect Jean Nouvel (born 1945) was awarded the Pritzker Prize - the world’s premier architecture honour - in 2008. Amongst his most famous buildings count the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Opéra de Lyon, the Fondation Cartier in Paris, Tokyo’s Dentsu Tower, Torre Agbar in Barcelona, the Musée du quai Branly in Paris, and Copenhagen’s concert hall.
Wittmann: Family Enterprise in Forth Generation
Wittmann has a tradition of craftsmanship dating back over a century. Together with his wife Ulrike Wittmann, Heinz Hofer-Wittmann runs the business in the forth generation. Continuous co-operations are upheld with designers like Paolo Piva, Matteo Thun, Toshiyuki Kita or Edward B. Tuttle. Besides that, Wittmann produces re-editions after designs by Austrian architects Josef Hoffmann and Friedrich Kiesler.
Every piece of furniture is hand-made by appointment in the Wittmann workshops. Accordingly, Wittmann offers bespoke service and is able to build furniture from drafts by architects and interior designers. Future owners of a genuine Wittmann can be present in the workshops while their furniture is made and have the opportunity to explore the secrets behind the excellent seating comfort or high durability. Like all Wittmann furniture, “Vienna” is available in all qualities of leather and fabrics of the Wittmann collection as well as coverings supplied by the customer.
