19/07/10 - “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” This is one of the messages of the writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the creator of the renowned novella “The Little Prince”. A message that aims at conveying that, above all, inspiration is needed in order to create something new. The history of design gives proof that the versatility of wood, when boldly interpreted and put to creative use, has often been the birth of a new form, such as the Thonet coffee house chair from the 1930s whose design became possible through a new production technique of bending wood. The chair CH04 Houdini by e15 is yet another expression of the design possibilities that emerge when wood as a material is reinterpreted and its shape is defined in the manufacturing process. This chair’s proportions and inviting appearance too are intricately linked to the production method itself. Made from thin oak-veneered plywood, it is inspired by a technique hitherto used only in aeroplane model making. The basic shape of this chair is created by first bending two-dimensional plywood by hand around a complexly milled solid wood ring to form the back. In order to make the curved two-dimensional elements stay in position, the scale-like arrangement of the slabs is then glued to the base to produce the self-contained seat shell. With its distinctive form language, this chair is appealing both placed in row at a dinner table and as a single object positioned within a space. Its daring design language captivates the of form captivates the beholder – as if the shape itself has revealed its own inspiration.
